Stepping in to lead the Art and Wine night at Selina hostel back in July turned into a very fulfilling weekly adventure. Every Thursday I set up a table and serve up guidance for creatives from around the world. A kaleidoscope of acrylic paint, palettes, brushes in a variety of sizes, canvas, pencils, inspiration images, and ideas swirl around for hours. Not to mention the wine, white, red, even smoothies, shots, and local beers.
It is always an international crowd. My local friends come and travelers from Australia, France, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, and it is always a feel of home to connect with fellow US Americans.
It is a really amazing way to connect with people and make new friends. I am the teacher of the class, yet I learn so much every time. Everyone has their own creative process and I love figuring out how to help them navigate it. (sometimes through language barriers and cultural differences. )
Helping people connect with their creativity to paint something beautiful fills me with so much Joy. To hear someone at the beginning of class say they are not very artistic or they haven't painted since kindergarten, and then see them turn out a masterpiece they are proud of, is amazing. To enter in that process with them or even just set the space to do so is a gift.
Sometimes people watch and offer up bids for the works of art at the end. I have a couple friends who have a lovely gallery wall in their home of a dozen colorful paintings. I like to imagine some paintings on walls around the world of reminders for people of their travels and time in Costa Rica.
I am always inspired and use the extra paint to make what I call "left overs". I may fill a future exhibition with them someday. My camera roll is full of joyful images of painting party happiness.
I look forward to many more magical moments around the table in the future. Come join me if you find yourself in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica any given Thursday night around 7pm stop by Selina!
I am also exploring ideas of doing this in different venues in the future so let's chat and we can set something up!?
